Breathtaking characters! ! !
I work with Fimo almost for six months - it's my hobby.
Last month I bought two books from "amazon" :
1."How to make clay characters"
2."Family and Friends in polymer clay".
They teach me how to do fascinating characters in so clearly ways.
I love those books because Maureen Carlson explanations are simply, clearly, amusing and accurate.
They can teach everyone how to make clay characters.
I find lots of full color pictures and detailed in those books that make this fun and easy to create clay characters.
The chapters about choosing the clay, gathering tools, basic techniques, and problems and solutions are very much comprehensive, and I wish I had those books when I first started to work with Fimo - because they would save me a lot of time and clay! ! !
I can't stop reading and doing the things in the book.
Everyone who see the things that I do with Fimo from those books can't believe that I did those characters, because they are so charming, adorable, exciting and breathtaking! ! !
I think that everyone who works with polymer clay should have those books.

great book for begining doll makers
The step by step illustrations in this book have saved me a great deal of time. I did not have to figure it all out for myself. I am very grateful to have found and used this wonderful book.

Thank you Maureen!
Artist Maureen Carlson has presented a wealth of information in this wonderful book. If you're interested at all in the art of dollmaking or figure sculpture, buy this book! Her caricatures of personal friends are absolutely delightful.

The Great Clay Adventure: Creative Handbuilding Projects For Young Artists
Published in Hardcover by Sterling Publishing (December, 1999)
Author: Ellen Kong

Great ideas
This book has been very helpful for myyoung children's clay classes. We successfully completed several projects from this book and everyone was happy: teacher, kids, parents. It was fun seeing the older kids come over from their wheels and be jealous of the little kids' projects. The book has also been a source of joy to me since the animal projects we did in class were so much fun, I continued the projects long after class was over.

The writing is clear, sometimes sparse, but the pictures are good. I also appreciated the associated learning that can accompany the projects (or vice versa).

AN IMAGINATION BOOSTER
The concise, clearly worded directions are easy to follow. No wasted words; no partial explanations. In the photographs accompanying each project, I like the mix of student and mature work. Also commendable are the explanations of how basic handbuilding techniques can be combined to produce lively ceramic art. All in all, The Great Clay Adventure stimulates the imagination. I highly recommend this book for clay artists, art teachers and school libraries.

NC K-12 Clay Exhibit
The past three years I have had the privilege of chairing an exhibition of K-12 student work in clay for the NC Pottery Center located in Seagrove, NC. This year my grant was generous enough for me to present each teacher who participated in our exhibiton a copy of Ellen Kong's book, The Great Clay Adventure. Each receipient was thrilled and eager to begin new clay projects with students.

We at the Pottery Center feel confident that distributing this incredible and inspiring book across our clay rich state of 100 counties will definitely stimulate our next generation of potters!!! Thank you, Ellen Kong!!

Guide to Marine Life of the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida
A well written, informative, easy to understand book. Not only do you receive a reference guide, you get biology lessons, photo tips, and great overviews of reef systems. This book is perfect for scuba divers!

best source I've seen for teaching diving ecology
I'm a scuba instructor, and have spent years looking for the perfect book to use in fish identification and underwater naturalist courses. When I found this book, I stopped looking! It is the perfect combination, and makes everything understandable to the beginner, yet still informative to us old pros! The photo tips also come in very handy in teaching photography and videography... no Caribbean diver can afford not to have this book... I mean it!

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY DIVER/SNORKELER
This is my latest addition to my "diving book collection". I am a recent diving convert (the very best sport ever), and find myself reading this book constantly (more looking at the pics I suppose, which are gorgeous!). If you are looking for a fantastic book to invest in...LOOK NO FURTHER...BUY IT, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

Laying It on the Line: Notes of a Team Player
Published in Hardcover by Sports Publishing, Inc. (19 January, 2001)
Authors: Howard Griffith and Terrell Davis
Average review score:

An inspiring story from a high class football player.
This is a book for anyone with dreams, or for someone who just wants to be a better person.

Howard Griffith is a first-class football player. In my honest opinion, Howard is the most underrated football player in the NFL. Year in and year out he is busting his butt for guys like Terrell Davis and Mike Anderson, and not complaining about it. This man made Terrell Davis. And hopefully he will get his pro-bowl before its all over.

Enough about him as a football player, on with the book. In this book, Howard talks about his life and the trials he has been through. This is a story of a man who never lost sight of his goals. While he has had a tough life, he never gave up, and always does his best to help his team - even if that means taking blocking assignments and never getting the ball. "Laying It On The Line, Notes Of A Team Player" teaches people to better themselves... ...to better the world. With his actions speak louder than words attitude, he teaches independance, how to be a person free from following others and just being the best person you can possibly be. He teaches about responsibility and maturity, and taking life seriously.

Reading this book was a turning point in my life. Before i read it, I was, simply stated, and punk kid. This book taught me the importance in doing your very best at everything you do and how important things like you education are to you. He shows you how you can be indepent but still conform, not to stick out. After reading this, It opened my mind really. Before hand I was quick to judge just about anyone that didn't believe exactly how I felt. Now I think empathatically, and am not so quick to judge. I know it's irrelavant, but its amazing what certain situation you can be put in can change you life around in a totally different manor.

Props to Howard Griffith with this truly inspiring story. This is a perfect book for anyone with dreams, and that is willing to work. Howard Griffith's book deserves every 5 stars I gave it, maybe more (if I could). Simply stated, this book can change you life.

Phenomenal
This self-proclaimed bookworm ranks this book as one of her all-time favorites. To those who aren't necessarily interested in football, to those who don't understand football, and for those who don't even know what football is, believe me when I say, you will undoubtedly connect with some, if not all of this autobiography. Indulge yourself in this down-to-earth, eye-opening, and often comedic drama that chronicles the ups and downs of life, as it relates to Griffith's chosen career of football. I see this book as more of the spiritual journey of a young man's life, explained through the metaphor of football. It could easily be a training development manual for any business consisting of more than one person - it's all about teamwork and the success, respect, honor and glory that can be achieved if all involved are confident and secure with their individual roles and truly understand the concept of "team." If you need to be "pumped up" and inspired about anything you're trying to accomplish in your life right now, I suggest you purchase this book - it just may be the medicine you need.

The best motivational book that I 've read thus far!
This a truly remarkable account of Griffith's story and the obstacles that he's faced to get where he is today(the best fullback in the NFL). There were so many points in his life that he could have given up--but he didn't. Don't think that it's your "typically" sports book--it's not! This book is for anyone that aspires to fulfill their dream. I highly recommend this book. Kudos to Griffith!!!

Making Miniature Dolls with Polymer Clay: How to Create and Dress Period Dolls in 1/12 Scale
Published in Paperback by Cassell (June, 2001)
Author: Sue Heaser
Average review score:

Just Fantastic!
Very clear directions and instructions with lots of pictures. This should be the first book that anyone buys, if they're wanting to make dollhouse dolls... simple enough for a beginner. Historical details.

Excellent even for beginners
I do a lot of different handwork, including very occasional polymer clay, but I bought this book because my then 5 yo daughter loved it. Everytime we went to the store that carried it, I browsed patterns and fabric, she lusted over this book. Finally, I just had to give in to her before someone else bought "her" book. :-)

We haven't been disappointed. The illustrations are very clear, and very much to scale. I love having clothing patterns for the dolls available- they're worthwhile even if you never make one of the dolls. The clear directions make it almost easy to make a face that actually looks like a face. The supplies lists are very straightforward and doesn't include anything you can't easily pick up at your local craft supply stores.

I highly recommend this book, even for children. A 6 yo is a little young to be able to carry out the project on her own, but working together with an adult is very possible.

absolutely outstanding book
If,together with this review,I could place a picture of the two dolls I was able to make following Sue Heaser's instructions in this book, you would know why this book should be in everyone's library (that is,all miniaturists). Do not miss out on the author's "Making dollhouse miniatures with polymer clay". This is,in my opinion, another "five stars" book that I absolutely love.

Mudworks: Creative Clay, Dough, and Modeling Experiences

So wonderful it's coming out in Spanish too!
I have loved this book for a long time - TONS of great activities and kids really love getting squishy. The Peanut Butter Playdough recipe is worth it alone! Now I heard that Bright Ring Publishing is putting this book out in a Bilingual Spanish Edition! I can't wait to use it in the classroom! What a wonderful resource and bold move! Bravo! And thank you from all of my Spanish-speaking students! They will love to see projects in their own language!

Great fun! Who knew there were this many doughs to play with
This book is far better organized than some activity books by other authors. Every activity has a symbol in the corner of the page indicating the age range for each project. Additional symbols for cooking, no cooking, air dry, bake dry, edible, caution, and "adult supervision always necessary" are used when applicable. These symbols make it very easy to flip through the book to find a good project for your child(ren). It is especially useful when trying to find projects for children of mixed ages. The layout of the directions is excellent with one project per page, materials clearly listed, mixture process easily explained, and then many optional variations and ideas to further change or expand on the basic project.

Lots of dough's, modeling compounds, homemade beads, plaster and papier mache projects. A section with edible items such as dog biscuits, pie crust, gingerbread and pretzels. At 150 pages you can imagine there is a lot here to keep you busy for a long time. Many of the projects can be made with ingredients most people have on hand at home. Some projects are fast and easy and others are more complex.

I would highly recommend this for every parent, teachers of young children, and even babysitters. This would make a great birthday gift as an alternative to toys, for 2 year-olds and up. I have found this very helpful on days when my children seem bored with our usual daily routine and on rainy days. As a homeschooling mother I have a lot of projects to do with my children, many of which I know are usually done in preschool or kindergarten.

WONDERFUL!

31 playdoughs?
Yep, 31 playdough recipes alone in chapter one ... some bake, some air dry, some handmix, some cook on the stove. Where to begin? Anything squishy and clay-like is found in these pages, from plaster of Paris, to papier-mache, to mud, to flour and salt clay, and more. This book is a basic for any home with kids, and that includes grandparents!

No Man Knows My Story
Published in Paperback by National Center for Constitutional Studies (01 September, 1998)
Author: Susan Clay
Average review score:

Emotional abuse follows unchecked anger.
I am a religious leader in Tucson, Arizona. I sometimes see husbands become angry with their wives and children. This book provides an inside view of the emotional abuse that follows unchecked anger. It will help those who deal with victims of emotional abuse to better understand the terrible pain and suffering that come from the deep wounds that follow emotional abuse. I am thankful to the missionaries in Florida that sent me my copy of this book and I recommend it to the clergy and social workers.

Abusive behavior can be passed from father to son.
Susan Clay's book was very painful for me to read. I have been married now for nearly thirty years and most of our children are starting families of their own. Susan Clay brings out in her book that her husband's father abused his wife and that her husband was following the example of his father. The scary thing for me is that my sons may emotional abuse their wives as my husband and my sons have me. I have tried to stay safely in denial, but I would never want another woman to walk the road that I have had to walk. This book has helped me see that abuse is an age old problem that will require the help of our whole society to keep in check. I highly recommend this book, even though, I will probably never be able to tell my husband that I read it. He would become very angry with me, if he found out that I had read it. He has never let me forget the last time I went for help.

The following quote from the scriptures found in "No Man Knows My Story" hits very close to home. "It is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion." My husband has twice served in high positions in our church. These were the times when he was most abusive to me. This book has a lot of food for thought.

I wish somehow my husband could find this book on his own and ponder the contents.

-afraid to come out of denial-

A powerful tool to aid victims of emotional abuse.
I just finished reading this very powerful book. It will be a very important tool to help victims of emotional abuse untangle themselves from the webs they are in.

I just went through a divorce three months ago and my emotional scares are still very deep. I am now alone with three children, it is hard! Susan Clay's book, "No Man Knows My Story" is right on. I really don't think that a man could understand what a woman in my position is going through, no matter how hard he tried. This book has helped me deepen my relationship with my God.

Original Porsche 924/944/968

Authors: Peter Morgan, Mark Hughes, Simon Clay, and Dieter Rebmann
Average review score:

The essential 944 Book
Every 924, 944 or 968 owner or enthusiast must have a copy of this excellent book by Peter Morgan. The book contains detailed information and superb photographs of all models in the series and is divided into logical chapters. The book is also an excellent reference containing details on VIN's, engine numbers and options.

Orginal PORSCHE 924/944/968
An absoulte must buy for the 924/944 owner. the book clearly guides you thru all models from 1975 to 1995, including the Turbos. All photographs are in color and the details of each model year are discussed. The book also includes specs and import numbers. Almost all options for each year are listed, a big plus when checking out what came with your car.

Informative
I have been driving/racing/instructing in Porsches since 1983, and am on my 3rd 944 series automobile. I only wish this book had come out many years ago, as it contains many of the answers to both the 1st-time and repeat buyers' questions. Its explanations of the rarer "special editions" is extremely helpful in determining which model is best suited for a particular driving style. I feel proud to have actually owned one of the featured models.

Modeling the Figure in Clay
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Pubns (April, 1996)
Authors: Bruno Lucchesi and Margit Malmstrom
Average review score:

Amazing book - but not exactly what I thought...
If this book was actually what I had been looking for, I would have given it 5 stars. However, it wasn't exactly what I had thought. It is not so much a "how-to" book as it is an illustrated diary of the artist's amazing process. This particular sculptor sculpts the entire skeleton, muscular system out to the finished sculpture you see on the front of the book. It's amazing but a little more detailed than I believe a beginner such as myself needs - I was a little daunted by the entire process but also quite in awe. The photographs are tremendous. This book would probably be better suited to students in advanced sculpture.

it's the next big thing eversince sliced bread
get it. Beat up little kids and take their lunch money to save up for it. By the way you should get it.

I Wish I Could Give It Six Stars
This book, along with the other titles in the series: "Modeling the Head in Clay" and "Terracotta," is an excellent resource for beginning sculptors. In fact, if I could buy only one book on sculpting, it would be one of these three (and most probably this one). The book is a walk-though of a single sculpture, which is instructive, but it is also a great reference. Mr. Lucchesi's style is realistic with natural poses, and quite pleasing -- it exudes peace and repose. Ms. Malmstrom has a gift for photographing and describing exactly those parts of the process most interesting to students. The medium is clay, and I'm working in wax, but I have not found this to be a problem. Be advised that it concentrates on the female figure, so an additional anatomy book may be helpful for proportioning male figures.
